Lace wigs come in very many different varieties and it can be useful to know the main differences between them. The cheapest ones can start from about £20 for a synthetic lace front while a top of the range virgin hair lace wigs Remy could set you back as much as £500 or more — and if you want to go to the very extreme, lace wigs such as the ones media icons such as Beyonce or Tyra wear could cost many thousands of pounds!

So, here is a brief summary of what you can get and how much you should be paying for them.

Synthetic Lace Front Wigs

These are made from a man-made fibre such as kanekalon and they can be extremely realistic and the best ones are very hard to distinguish from a human hair lace wig. It’s worth paying a little more for a good quality synthetic because they will last longer, look more realistic, and you will have the ability to style them. Make sure that they are heat resistant because then you will be able to use an iron on them to straighten or curl them, just make sure that you don’t set your iron to too high a temperature. They come in a variety of textures from silky straight like you get with Indian hair, to body waves and yaki straight which resemble relaxed afro hair. They also come in a wide variety of colours but its best to buy the colour you want as dying them will be problematic. Expect to pay anything from £20 to £100 for them, but remember, you get what you pay for so it’s worth investing about £40 — £60 if you want one that’s both going to look good and stay the course.

Human Hair Lace Front Wigs

This is the next step up. They are made of human hair and you can style them in the same way that you can style any human hair. Look for ones that are advertised as ‘Remy’ because they will be less prone to tangling and will keep their quality for longer. Like the synthetics, they come in many different textures such as silky straight, body wave, yaki straight and kinky straight, which is a coarser version resembling natural afro hair. You should be paying anything from about £70 for a short version to around £150 for a 20–22 inch version. Lace front wigs have normally 2–3 inches of lace at the front into which the hair is knotted individually with the back composed of hair on wefts with an adjustable strap at the back for secure fitting.

Human Hair Full Lace Wigs

These have a cap made entirely of lace with usually a strip of stretch lace across the top to make them more ‘one size fits all’ because the lace will expand to accommodate different head sizes and the growth of your natural hair underneath. For all these wigs you should tightly braid your own natural hair underneath to ensure a good fit.

Virgin Human Hair Full Lace Wigs

These are the top of the range lace wigs. The hair is virgin Remy, which means that the hair has not been treated or dyed in any way, and the hair is all laid from root to tip (Remy) so that the hair is less prone to tangling or matting. Because they are made from 100% natural hair they can be dyed successfully — if you are offered a range of colours then it is likely that they are not the virgin, most virgin hair is either an off black or a dark brown colour. Expect to pay anything from £200 — £400 for these types of full lace wig.

Finally, a useful tip is to go to an established supplier who offers a returns policy if you are not satisfied with what you buy. Look for a website that offers a wide range of styles, or eBay& Amazon are also secure ways to find the wig you want because they have strict guidelines about the accuracy of description and returns. But remember, you do get what you pay for, so like anything, cheapest is not best and the most expensive is not always a guarantee of quality either so have a look at the various suppliers to compare prices and ask questions!
